You Are Not Your Business

You Are Not Your Business

You are not your business.

There's a reason everyone and their mother tells you to niche down, choose a focus, and stay in your lane.

And the reason you're so resistant to this advice is that you think it means that YOU have to niche down. 👀

You, the individual.

But here, I'm talking about your business. Not you.

As creatives, we naturally see our businesses as an extension of ourselves.

That's totally normal, because your business is a creative byproduct of your imagination.

That's why when you niche down or choose a focus for your business, it feels like you're narrowing your identity.

But that's not actually the case.

"I could never niche down because I like to do everything!"

And I love you for that.

Your interests are what make you creative, unique, and human. But here's where I want you to look at it differently:

Nobody is asking you to stop doing those things forever.

When someone (AKA me) asks you to niche down, they're asking your business to niche down, because your business and entrepreneurial success hinge on your ability to stay focused.

The reason your business hasn't taken off yet is that it's not focused.

Notice I didn't say YOU aren't focused. I said "it" - the business!

I want YOU to enjoy all of your creative passions. Pursue different art forms! Experiment. Try lots of different hobbies!

But choose a focus for your business.

YOU are separate from YOUR BUSINESS, and focusing your business on just one thing doesn't mean you need to constrain yourself as an artist or individual.

Just because you're good at it, doesn't mean you have to sell it.

As creatives, we are good at lots of different things. We have to be! It's part of what can make us wildly successful, but it's also a double-edged sword.

I fall into this trap all the time. If I'm not careful, my business loses focus too.

Because I too, am a multi-passionate-hyphenate-slash-faceted creative artist, with LOTS of different interests:

  • photography (I started the solopreneur life as a brand photographer)

  • website design (I used to code websites for funsies when I was 12)

  • social media & content creation

  • personal branding

  • software engineering (I used to be a software engineer at Apple)

  • backend systems & automations, CRM buildouts, other techy things

  • event planning and hosting

But just because I'm good at it, and I could charge people for it...doesn't mean I should sell it.

Because trying to sell all of these things at once would be hella confusing. It would dilute my message and my brand. If I tried to do everything for everyone, nobody would remember me for anything.

"If they're doing that and making money, I could be, too. I'm so much better than they are! I could do a much better job!"

Well, you're probably right. And I can soooo relate to how bothersome it is when someone seemingly less talented than you appears to be booking more business.

But this line of thinking is keeping you stuck. You're letting someone else's success dictate your direction and focus, which is a losing battle. You're chasing what somebody else is doing, instead of deciding what you want to be doing and following your own path.

What you focus on, your brain filters for. If you are constantly focusing on what other people are doing, it'll be that much harder to grow your creative business.

Instead, focus on YOU and what YOU want.

  • On an ideal day, what would you be doing?

  • Who would you be working with?

  • What does your business look like?

I want you to decouple your creative expression from the business.

The business doesn't have to encapsulate every single piece of you because it isn't you.

When you can decouple your creative fulfillment from your business, I promise you'll see more success, both financial and personal.

It will be easier and faster for you to make business decisions.

You'll stop agonizing over every opportunity that comes your way, because you'll have a filter: does this fit my focus, or doesn't it?

You'll stop feeling guilty for not pursuing every single thing you're good at, because you'll know those things aren't going anywhere. They're just not what the business is focused on right now.

And if you need help thinking through what this could look like for you, you can learn more about 1:1 coaching with me here.
